The history of the School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering can be traced back to the Department of Biochemistry established by Ningbo Teachers College in 1956 (later the Department of Chemistry of Ningbo Teachers College); in October 1996, the Department of Chemistry of Ningbo University was established when the "three schools merged"; 2000 In May, he merged with mathematics and physics to form the Faculty of Science of Ningbo University, and became the Department of Chemistry. In December 2005, the Department of Chemistry was independent from the Faculty of Science and established the School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering.

The college has a grassroots teaching organization with a department of chemistry, a department of materials science and engineering, and a central laboratory. The grassroots academic organization has a medical biomaterials research institute, a research institute for energy materials and industrial catalysis, an inorganic materials research institute, and polymer materials. Institute, Advanced Separation Materials Research Institute, Mass Spectrometry Technology and Application Research Institute. There are 3 undergraduate majors, 1 first-level degree master's degree, 1 professional master's degree, 1 second-level doctoral degree; 2 chemistry and materials sciences. The disciplines all entered the top 1% of the world's esi rankings; one provincial key first-level discipline (material science and engineering); one of the city's major disciplines (material science and engineering) and municipal key disciplines (physical chemistry); We will build one national key laboratory cultivation base, two key laboratories in Ningbo, one provincial key science and technology innovation team, three “3315” global high-end entrepreneurial innovation teams in Ningbo, and one Zhejiang experimental teaching demonstration center.

There are 342 full-time undergraduate undergraduates, 395 graduate students, 122 faculty members, including 97 full-time teachers, 31 full-time teachers, 42 senior deputy titles, and 19 doctoral supervisors. The proportion of teachers is 98%. There are 1 Changjiang Scholar, 1 National Excellent Youth, 1 National "New Century Hundred Talents Project", 1 Specialist Member of the State Council Special Allowance, and 2 "Thousand Talents Plan" in Zhejiang Province. In the new century, 151 talents were trained in the province, 11 were young and middle-aged academic leaders, and 1 was a provincial rookie.

In the past five years (2014-2018), the college has undertaken 303 projects of various types and at various levels, with a total funding of 77.835 million yuan. It has published 903 academic papers in authoritative academic journals and important academic conferences at home and abroad, including sci and ei. The number of sci papers and top journal papers published in the forefront of the school, sci papers accounted for about 20% of the school's sci papers. 279 patents granted, including 197 invention patents.

The college has extensive and close contact and communication with its peers at home and abroad, and has established good cooperative relations with many famous universities and research institutions at home and abroad such as California Institute of Technology, American University of Akron, and Institute of Materials Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In many fields, the joint training of talents and academic cooperation and exchanges have been carried out. The teachers of the college actively participate in various academic conferences at home and abroad in their respective fields.

The college pays attention to the quality education and innovation ability training of students, and strives to promote the study style of diligent and eager to learn and develop and innovate. It fully implements the two-level management system of the school class, enhances the comprehensive service ability of the functional departments such as academics and educational affairs, and effectively promotes the self-management and standardization of the class. The chemical design competition, the college students' polymer materials innovation and entrepreneurship competition, the Zhejiang chemical science competition and other scientific and technological competitions have won many awards.
